You have been excited for months now. As you come to the conclusion of your
manuscript, you are getting ready for the day when you finally send it in to a major
publishing house. You are sure it will get accepted, after all, it is your best work in
years! This is how many writers feel when they submit their first manuscript to a large
publishing house. Unfortunately many times these writers will receive a heart wrenching
rejection letter in the mail a couple months later. Many times the rejection letter a writer
receives will lead to the writer feeling mad at themselves. To be a successful writer
though, it is important to learn how to deal with rejection.
If you ever submit a manuscript to a publishing house, you have to realize that there
are many other people doing the exact same thing as you. Even though you might think
that your work is good, when compared to others it might not be. Most likely a rejection
letter is not personal, it’s just that there were other manuscripts out there that were more
creative than yours. Many times getting rejected by a publishing house is not even a
matter of creativity. You can be the most creative writer in the world, but if there is not
a market for it, a publishing house will not pick up your manuscript. This is because
a publishing house’s main objective is to sell many copies of your final manuscript.
Rejection letters are never personal, it’s just that there are many writers to choose from
and you weren’t the one.
Hopefully you can still salvage this manuscript and one day get a publishing house to
publish it. However you need to take some steps soon after you receive your rejection
letter. This is because right after you receive your rejection letter, you will be more likely
to make good changes to your manuscript. After you have made significant changes
to your manuscript, get people to edit it for you. Maybe all the grammatical errors your
manuscript had caused it to be rejected. The unfortunate part about rejection letters is
that you never know exactly what was wrong with it. So, you should try and make sure
everything is perfect before you send it to another publishing house.
If you feel like you have done all you can do for a specific manuscript, it might be time
to move on to the next. You never know how a different story will go with a publishing
house. Maybe your first manuscript just wasn’t the right genre for the publishing house.
Another option is self publishing your manuscript. Although this will require more money
to begin with, it could turn out to be even more profitable in the end. The most important
thing that writers should know is that getting a rejection letter does not mean you should
stop writing. As long as you keep writing, you will have a good chance that one day at
least one of your manuscripts will get published. After that, it should be easier to get
your works read by millions.
Remember, most writers will get rejected at least a few times – it’s the nature of the industry. Most great authors were rejected.
