What to Do Before Looking for a Publisher

Writing a book can be a wonderful way to tell a story, voice your opinion, make a career, or just have some fun. The road to getting your book published is a very long process that will require you to have a lot of patience. Even some of the most successful authors, such as Stephen King, had trouble getting published.

Before you even start writing the first edition of your manuscript, you need to make sure that you have a solid idea for your book. If you are writing a narrative style book, you need to try and make your plot line as unique as possible. If people have read something like it before, it will not sell. These kind of books are usually labeled as “knock offs” and don’t do well when they hit the book stores. If you are writing an biography style book, do you have a unique take on the person’s life you are writing about? Perspective and fresh facts are important things to keep in mind if you want to publish a successful biography. If you are writing more of a technical piece like a recipe book, always ask yourself if you have a twist on recipes that people have heard of before. Maybe writing a special section about a spice you use in the recipe or a different way of cooking the recipe sets your version apart from the rest.

The main task you have to do before you look for a publisher is editing. Always try and find a more effortless way of saying what you want to say. Read over your manuscript as many times as you can to see if you can replace any of the current adjectives you have with new ones. People want to feel like they are in your story, not just an outsider looking in. Strong, descriptive adjectives is the easiest way to provide readers with this experience. Also, it is a good idea to pay attention to how many chapters you have before you look for a publisher. Have friends and family read over your manuscript and ask for their opinions about how many chapters you have. Do they think that you don’t have enough chapter or do they think there are way too many chapters? The more people you do this with, the more you will know what the general opinion is.

If you want to write a successful book, you need to find a good publisher. Having a unique story idea written with descriptive words and the right amount of chapters can help set you apart from the many other writers hoping to get their books published. If you do not lay the ground work when you first write your manuscript, you will have a hard time getting yours noticed over others. Many writers feel that the hardest part about writing a book is not the actual writing part, it is about finding a publisher that wants the book. The reason there are writers that feel like this is because their manuscript doesn’t draw readers in with descriptive words and easy to read sentences. You have to do these things before you even begin to look for a publisher, or else no publishing house will want you.
