What are the Different Types of Publishers?

You finally have it! The perfect manuscript that is ready to be published and make you millions. Unfortunately many people think writing a good piece of writing will just come to them out of the blue and make them the money they need, but it rarely happens like this. In order to be successful in the writing industry, you not only have to write a good manuscript, but find a good publisher. In the writing industry, there are two main ways of getting your work published. This includes getting your work published by a publishing house or self publishing your work. While self publishing is convenient because you know that you will be able to get your work published, getting your work published by a large publishing house has many advantages too. This article will detail what the difference is between a big publishing house and self publishing.

One of the best things about getting your manuscript published by a large publishing house is that you will be able to get input all the time. There will always be people around you that are familiar with the industry and that will be willing to help you if you have questions. When you are signed with a publishing house, you don’t have to worry as much about the cover design for the book or the particular font. While you will have a say in the design, you will be pleased to know that there is a specific person whose job it is to make sure the design looks inviting and professional. This can relieve a good amount of stress off of you.

You will also not have to worry about all the marketing that goes into making a successful book. While you might have to show up at a few events, you do not have to plan the events or pay travel expenses; your publishing house will take care of that for you. This will save you a lot of time and effort. And if a particular event turns out to be a flop, you won’t be out the money for the event.

Money is one of the biggest reasons that most writers choose to submit their manuscripts to a publishing house. Even though it is very hard to get your manuscript accepted by a publishing house, once you do, you can be guaranteed some money, even if the book does not sell well. Usually once you book gets accepted by a publishing house, you will get a good advance. An advance is a portion of money you get for the book. The amount of money you will get from an advance depends on your experience and how good your manuscript is. Why so many writers like advances is because no matter how bad the book does, the publishing house can’t take away the advance they gave you. Publishing houses will also give you a percentage of the profits made on the book. The better the book does, the more money you will make.

While getting your manuscript accepted at a large publishing house does offer many advantages, self publishing your manuscript does as well. Some of these advantages include complete creative control over your work and a fast turn around time for the book to be in book stores.

The most common reason that many writers choose to self publish is because they want strict creative control on what is done to their manuscript. Many times if you manuscript is accepted by a publishing house, there will be some revisions done do it. These may be changes that lead the book in a different direction, a direction that the author does not necessarily want to take. Unfortunately, if the writer does not agree with the publishing house’s choice, many time the publisher will just decide not to publish the book. However with self publishing, you can make sure that your book is perceived the way it was meant to.

Self publishing is also a much better way to get a book out if you do not have much time. While publishing houses can take up to a year to get a writer’s book out to the book stores, self publishers can get their books out in a matter of months. This would be useful if you were writing a book about a weight loss diet that is just hot for a couple months and then the trend dies.

It is important to know why some people choose to publish their manuscripts with a publishing house, while others want to self publish their writing. There are many advantages to each and it is good to know which will work better for your manuscript.
